The Wax Lab specializes in professional vinyl record preservation and restoration services including ultrasonic record cleaning, warp correction, archival preservation and stylus inspection designed to “restore playability” and protect valuable record collections.

Collectors, audiophiles, DJ’s, archivists, and anyone with a vinyl collection can benefit.  Professional restoration can significantly improve sound quality and extend the lifespan of your records.

Many issues such as dirt, contamination, and mild warping can often be improved through professional treatment.  However, severe physical damage like deep scratches, groove wear, and heat damage are permanent and not repairable.

Professional cleaning and preservation typically improve a record’s condition and longevity, which can help maintain or increase its value among collectors.

Ultrasonic Cleaning

What is ultrasonic record cleaning?

Ultrasonic cleaning uses high-frequency sound waves in specialized cleaning bath to remove microscopic dirt, oils and contaminants embedded deep within vinyl grooves.

Yes.  When performed using proper equipment and controlled processes, ultrasonic cleaning is considered one of the safest and most effective way to clean vinyl records.

Ultrasonic cleaning can remove dust, oils, mold residue, smoke contamination, fingerprints, and other particles trapped deep within the record grooves.

While it cannot remove physical groove damage, ultrasonic cleaning often significantly reduces surface noise caused by debris and contaminants.

Collectors typically benefit from professional cleaning when acquiring used records or when noise buildup becomes noticeable.

Warp Correction

What is warp correction?

A controlled flattening process that improves playback stability on edge, dish, or moderate wave warps. Results vary by record.

Warping is typically caused by heat exposure, improper storage, pressure, or environmental conditions.

Many warped records can be improved using controlled flattening techniques that gradually restore the record’s shape.

Professional warp correction uses carefully controlled temperatures and pressure designed to safely reduce warping without damaging the vinyl.

Results vary depending on the severity of the warp.  While mild to moderate warps often improve significantly, extreme warping may not be fully reversible.

In many cases, reducing a warp improves playback stability, tracking, and overall sound performance.

Archival Preservation

What is archival record preservation?

Archival preservation focuses on protecting records from deterioration through proper cleaning, storage recommendations, and environmental control.

Records should be stored vertically in protective sleeves in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

Professional cleaning can often remove many contaminants including mold residue and environmental debris.

Yes.  When handled properly using professional techniques, vintage records can often benefit greatly from restoration.

Stylus Inspection

Why is stylus inspection important?

A worn stylus can damage vinyl records and degrade sound quality.  Regular inspection helps prevent unnecessary wear to your collection.

Signs of stylus wear may include distortion, skipping, excessive surface noise, or visible debris build up.

Many stylus manufacturers recommend inspection after 300 – 500 hours of playback, depending on stylus type and condition.

Yes.  A severely worn or damaged stylus can permanently damage record grooves during playback.

Stylus inspection typically involves magnified visual examination to detect wear, contamination, or damage.

Service Process

How long does the restoration process take?

Service time depends on the number of records and type of treatment required. Most projects are completed in 3–5 business days. Warp Rescue and large collections may take longer.

Appointments are recommended to ensure proper handling and evaluation of your records

Yes.  Larger collections can be evaluated to determine the best restoration and preservation approach.

While results vary depending on the condition of the record, many customers experience noticeable improvements in playback clarity and reduced noise.

Record Care

How should I handle vinyl records?

Always handle records by the edges and label area to avoid transferring oils and debris to the grooves.

Yes.  Using incorrect cleaning methods or household solutions can damage vinyl surfaces.

Crackling may be caused by permanent groove wear or damage that cannot be removed through cleaning alone.

Proper tracking force, anti-skate settings, and a healthy stylus are essential for protecting records during playback.

Why choose professional record restoration?

Professional restoration uses specialized equipment and controlled techniques designed to safely clean and preserve vinyl records beyond what most home methods can achieve.
